Stylists are moving away from stick-straight strands and towards a fuller version of the same style. Hair tends to be more desirable when it’s plump, as seen in REESE WITHERSPOON’s new do at the recent SAG awards. A little bit of volume is sexier and much more touchable. The great thing about this look is that it’s achievable for most hair types. First off, applying the correct product does half of the work for you. For fine hair, lightly spritz a volumizing spray from roots to ends. For curly hair, run a nickel-sized drop of flexible-hold gel throughout the hair; and on thick hair, apply a heat-protecting spray from root to ends. Once hair is dry “you’ll have less to manage and the fuller it will be—proving that minimum effort can yield maximum result,” advises Allure magazine.

Prep hair by towel-drying, then applying your styling product (see above). Flip head upside down and gently tousle while running a blow-dryer through it until it is only slightly damp. Flip hair back up and secure top section at the crown with a clip.

Using a round brush, blow-dry the sides and back of hair. Pull a three-inch wide section out to the side, wrap the ends under, and roll the brush halfway up. Once dry, hold for a moment without heat on it, then gently unravel.

Unclip the top layers. Position the brush under the hair and pull each section straight up. Roll hair back toward the scalp, and gently unwind. To finish, smooth a light weight serum over hair. If hair is fine, mist with hair spray.

Damaged hair requires daily maintenance in order to nurse it back to health. Unfortunately, we don’t always have the time our hair needs. There are ways to cheat your way to hair rescue. It’s not recommended for regular upkeep, but these tactics will work in a pinch.

Leave it in. Comb a leave-in conditioner while hair is still damp. Then scrunch a palmful of Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam from root to tip. Because it contains conditioning agents, it will soften up even brittle hair due to coloring or chemical processing, like KIRSTEN DUNST’s (shown).

Blow-dry carefully. Heat styling is a big reason why hair becomes damaged. It is possible to hide heat’s effects, however. Stand up and look down at your feet. Part hair so that half falls over each shoulder. Blow-dry only the roots until they are dry and let the ends air dry.

Avoid frizz. If hair is curly, skip the blow-dry and comb a lightweight conditioner like Framesi BY Sparkling Mousse Light through damp hair. Then scrunch ends and let air dry.

Hide the ends. For severely damaged hair, spray the bottom half with Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Shine and Define Spray to protect it. Then wrap ends section-by-section around a large barrel curling iron. If hair still looks parched, rub a few drops of anti-frizz serum through ends. Pomade will also work here.

Put it up. You can easily hide damaged ends by putting your hair up. Pull hair into a pony tail and wrap it around itself. Once you’ve created a bun, push in long narrow bobby pins at various directions until it stays put. Let bangs and layers fall loose to create a sexy-messy look, such as SANDRA BULLOCK’s (shown).

No one can stop talking about REESE WITHERSPOON’s gorgeous new do at the Oscars. Wearing Nina Ricci, Reese’s long and swingy locks were the perfect compliment as she strolled down the red carpet looking better ever (just months post-divorce may I add)! Her extensions were first seen at the Golden Globes, several weeks before the Oscars. Clearly, Reese took very good care of her extensions because they looked fabulously natural and polished for the big night. Read on for tips on maintaining your extensions to keep them looking as good as Reese’s:

1. Do not pull too hard. Though extensions are pretty hardy and become part of your own hair when attached, they are still special and delicate.

2. Teasing is not recommended. Treat your extensions preciously and they’ll last 3 months or longer.

3. Do not use harsh products. Use gentle cleansers and styling agents made with natural ingredients.

4. Shampoo carefully using gentle wriggling motions with your fingers traveling downward with the grain of your hair – never against it.

5. When towel-drying, don’t be vigorous – just squeeze the towel against your hair.

6. Do not use conditioners, oils, and serums where the extensions are attached because they could cause the extensions to loosen and fall out. Feel free to condition the ends and the middle – just not the base. If extensions are shorter, just use your fingers coated with a bit of leave-in conditioner.

7. Before brushing, run your fingers gently through your extensions. Use only a soft-bristled brush.

8. Always tie your hair back when sleeping or exercising to keep extensions from getting too roughed up.

Celebrities like JENNIFER ANISTON go from short to long in what seems like seconds. Hair extensions used to be reserved for stars who wanted to go glam on the red carpet. But now, long and luscious locks are available to everyone and more salons are offering extensions. There are a number of ways this trend can work for you:

Grow out bangs

Bangs inevitably encounter an awkward stage where they are too long that they are in your eyes, but too short to tuck behind your ears. Extensions can be weaved into the front area of your hair to ease the growing-out phase.

Add highlights

With extensions, you can add temporary highlights or lowlights without damaging your hair. This is an especially good method if you want to try funky colors because you won’t have to bleach first, and then color. Of course, extensions also work if a more natural look is desired. Just ask you stylist for colors that will flatter your skin tone and work with your existing hair color.

Go for length

Extensions can add up to 28 inches of length, bringing you from a short bob to flowing locks no problem. With this freedom, you can try different looks anytime without waiting for hair to reach a certain length.

Add volume after hair loss

In order to weave extensions, hair only needs to be four inches long. This is an excellent way to create a look while your natural hair grows out. It is also an alternative to wigs and head scarves. You can also supplement your extensions by using a volume enhancing shampoo.

Thicken up thin hair

By asking your stylist to weave in slightly wavy hair, you can plump up your locks and add volume in no time.
