Gwen Stefani

She may claim in her lyrics to be "just a girl," but we know Gwen Stefani is much more than that. Her beguiling combination of punk rocker and pin-up girl has made her an alt-rock superstar and paved the way for a new wave of self-expression in fashion and music. If you want to spice up your style and you have at least chin-length, layered hair, follow these steps from celebrity stylist John Sahag to get this funky look yourself.

Step 1: Towel dry clean hair so that it is damp but not wet. Using a spray-on "lift" product, apply liberally (25-30 sprays) to the entire head, then comb through to assure an even application.

Step 2: Begin blow-drying the hair by turning the head upside down and brushing the hair in all directions until it is about 80 percent dry, focusing on the base. The hair should look full and messy.

Step 3: Flip the head back to continue styling. Begin to brush the hair in a downward motion from the crown. When the brush almost reaches the ends of the hair, turn it slightly up and out and continue to dry from underneath. The goal here is a deconstructed, messy half-flip not a full curl.

Britney Spears

Have you seen Britney Spears’s “Boys” video? In it she wears two looks. They are completely different from each other and both are very stylish and easy to create.

For the wavy look ...
The cut: The hair is cut into long layers creating fullness through the top and tapering down to less fullness at the bottom.

The style: Some of you may be able to simply apply styling mousse or gel and scrunch this style into shape, however, if you don’t have naturally curly or permanent waved hair, you can get this look using one of these techniques:

1. Waving Iron: Shampoo and condition your hair, towel dry and apply hair gel or mousse formulated for your hair texture. Blow your hair dry for fullness by turning your head upside down and aiming the dryer at the roots first and then the ends. When your hair is completely dry, you can use a waving iron to press waves into your hair. Taking thin panels of hair, gently press the waves in, being careful to line up the waves as you move down the hair shaft.

2. Braiding: Prepare your hair as above. Turn your head upside down and blow-dry just the root area for fullness. While it is still damp, style your hair into many medium sized braids. Remove the braids when your hair is completely dry, then comb, using only your fingers.

To finish styling both of the above styles, flip your hair upside down again and spray the underneath layers with hair spray, for added fullness. Shake it back into place and scrunch in a little pomade, wax or hair crème to help separate the waves and to add moisture to the ends.

Ms. Spears’ second style in the video is a dressier look. This style is a very smooth, sleek and shiny updo. Unless your hair is very long, you will need a ponytail add-on piece similar to these that found at Studio Hairpiece Salon. Brush all of your hair back into a high ponytail, leaving out the bangs. Pin the hairpiece into place. If you pin it into the center of your own ponytail, you can pull some pieces of your own hair forward and use hair wax and hairspray to form it into a few fan shaped pieces. This will camouflage the base of the hairpiece. Finish this style with hairspray, smoothing down any stray hairs. Then spray with spray shine for a high gloss. Take a tip from Britney. With a little effort, you will be having fun with these versatile and stylish looks.

Jessica Alba

Even though the stunning actress is burning up the theaters with her sizzling portrayal as stripper Nancy Callahan in Sin City, most people know her from television's 2000 Dark Angel Sci-Fi hit series. As the gorgeous, genetically enhanced, super-human heroine Max Guevara, Jessica kicked some serious enemy butt. Her character was famous for sporting a bar coded tattoo. Sadly, Dark Angel only lasted until 2002.

The 24 year old Taurus derives her exotic beauty from a French-Danish mother and Mexican, Indian and Spanish father. The mixed parentage has posed some acting challenges for the rising star due to ultimate confusion about her ultimate ethnic heritage.

Although you might not believe it from looking at her, Jessica is challenged by a pesky cowlick and fly-away frizz. She keeps both at bay with the help of a hair wax. She also prefers wash and wear hair, putting her newly washed hair, when it is longer, "up in pigtails, braids or a ponytail" and using her fingers to tousle it dry when it is shorter. Letting her short crop air dry is actually healthier than using a hot blow dry that might strip the color or dry out her tresses further.

Step 1: Jessica's hair has been heavily highlighted and colored for years. This tends to make hair dry and prone to the fly-a-ways and frizz that Jessica experiences.
To protect bleached, blonde highlighted or colored tresses, start by rinsing hair completely with lukewarm water. Keep in mind that hotter temperatures will speed up fading and dry hair even further. Select a super moisturizing shampoo formula or one designed for colored hair. For ultra dry or super fragile strands, use the dilute the shampoo* for extra gentleness.

*
To dilute shampoo mix 1 part of your favorite product in a freshly washed container with 8-10 parts of warm water. Shake until the mixture forms a suds. Drizzle the suds over the top of your crown and pat into wet strands. Gently drizzle some of the sudsy formula down the length of your strands. Pat carefully. Apply only one shampoo application. Rinse well with lukewarm water. If your hair is very prone to extreme dryness or frizz, consider adopting a treatment program for dry hair or for fighting frizz.

Step 2: Gently squeeze excess water out of the strands. Apply your favorite leave-in conditioner with your fingers. Match the conditioning product to your hair type, texture and condition. Work the conditioner into the driest parts of your hair. Leave on for up to five minutes. Rinse well. Finish with a cool to cold water rinse.

Step 3: Towel blot your strands to remove excess drippage. Apply your favorite detangling product or leave-in conditioning product based on your type, texture and current condition of your strands. Keep in mind that if you have fine or thin strands, you will want to use a very light detangling spray. For medium to thicker strands, use a heavier conditioning product. If you are prone to frizz, experiment with frizz fighting formulas.

Step 4: If you want to go for Jessica's sleek straight style, be sure to either apply a defrisant product or a straightening balm. Distribute a dime-sized dollop of the product of your choice into the palms of your hands and mix well. Use your fingers to work the product completely through your tresses.

Step 5: Separate your hair into 2" sections and blow dry with a large round brush, starting near the back of the head and working around to the front on either side. Beginning at the back of your head, blow-dry hair in half-inch pieces using a large round brush. To create extra volume, hold brush in the hair near the scalp until the hair cools (about five seconds), then move the brush down and through to the ends of the hair.

Step 6: To create a super straight finish, use a hot flat iron to touch up any sections that require a smoother texture.

Step 7: If desired, spray lightly with the hairspray of your choice. Finish with a shine serum or spray. Apply to the palms of your hands and lightly brush across the surface of your hair.

If you prefer to go with Jessica messy, choppy bedhead look, follow all of the steps above until Step 5. Skip the blow drying and let tresses air dry instead. Use your fingertips to tousle the ends to get that edgy look.

Jennifer Aniston

It would probably surprise many Jennifer Aniston hair watchers to learn that the beloved star of TV's Friends didn't like all the attention that was focused on her tresses.

Jen's short Rachel bob was the first hairstyle she wore that created a frenzy. However, since she first appeared on Friends in 1994 the Aquarian (February 11, 1969) has changed her hairstyles over the years and appears to prefer her hair long and soft with a hint of texture. To style your tresses straight like Jennifer, complete the following steps:

Step 1: Shampoo and condition your hair with your normal products designed for your current hair type, texture and condition. If your hair is highlighted like Jessica's use either a moisture enhanced or color enriched formula. If your hair is dry from chemical processing, consider diluting the shampoo formula to protect your strands. If you have fine or thin hair, use a volume enhancing shampoo. Skip any rinse-out conditioning products that might make hair too soft and flat. If you must use a rinse-out conditioner, make sure that you limit how much you use and that you concentrate on the middle to the ends. Rinse well with a cool water spray which helps build natural volume and increases shine.

Step 2: Towel blow strands. Detangle strands from the ends to the roots.

Step 3: Apply a volumizing gel or similar products to the roots. To protect against heat and add body, distribute a leave-in conditioner, mousse or gel from the top of the ears to the ends. Distribute well. Note: If your hair tends to frizz or is naturally wavy or curly, you may wish to combine a volume product for the roots with a smoothing serum for the rest of the hair.

Step 4: Working from side to side use a boar's head or natural round brush combined with your blow dryer to straighten and build in body.

Step 5: To build in volume at the roots, use the round brush to lift your tresses up and direct the air flow from the dryer up the hair shaft to the root. This "ruffles the cuticle" helping to add natural fullness. If you prefer, bend over at the waist and direct the air flow of the dryer up the hair shaft towards the roots. When hair is 90% dry, bend right side up and work on the hair from the ears down to the ends. Note: Hairdressers differ on their opinion whether it is beneficial to blow hair "upside down" or not. Use your own judgment on which technique works best for you.

Step 6: Use the round brush to straighten the remainder of the hair by rolling individual sections carefully around the brush and directing the air flow down the hair shaft towards the ends. This helps to straighten, close the cuticle and adds shine.

Step 7: While drying the ends, use the round brush to turn the ends under slightly while finishing.

Step 8: Seal the style by finishing up with a blast of cool air, if possible, from your blow dryer.

Step 9: Carefully comb in your desired part.

Step 10: To add soft curls and waves to Jennifer's straight hairstyle, separate hair into 2-3 inch sections. Working from side to side near the roots, use a 1 1/2" curling iron and create big curls with the iron. Release each curl and then carefully pin into place with a bobby pin. Continue to curl and pin until the entire hair has been finished. Let the curls air dry until 100% cool.

Step 11: Spray the pinned curls with a strong hold hairspray or volume spray. Carefully unpin the curls.

Step 12: Apply a tiny drop of shine serum, drops or spray into the balms of your hands. Lightly brush the palms over the top of your style and you are ready to rock ala Jennifer Aniston style.

If you prefer, you can use a curling iron to turn under the ends a little bit or use a straight iron on selected pieces around the face to give a contrasting texture to the bobbed look.

Aisha Tyler

Not only is she funny, intelligent, and talented - but she's got great hair! She won the award for Best Short Cut in Marie Claire Magazine. Her short, stylish cut looks good almost everyone (even if you think you can't wear short hair).

The Cut: It's flattering to most, but if you have really curly hair, it'll take work -- and a powerful hair dryer -- to get the look. Ask for a shag with slightly overgrown fringe. If your face is very round, go slightly longer than Tyler's style to avoid accentuating your face's width, says Reed.

The Style: Prep hair after washing, with a moisture based treatment. Then blow dry or let air dry. Use a dual-use flat iron that will both straighten and curl in the same appliance. These irons are ceramic all the way around and are curved. Work with 1-inch to 1.5-inch sections at a time. Straighten each section first to smoothen and then go over the same section, but this time curl the hair. Curl the hair by starting the curl at the middle of the section and then pulling slightly until you have curled the entire section. You may also flip the end for a different look.

Hilary Duff

This multi-talented young lady is best known for her role as Lizzie McGuire on the Disney Channel but also sings and has a starrng role in the movie Agent Cody Banks. These accomplishments, together with her natural beauty and sweet bashful personality makes her the idol of many girls from grade school through the teen years. Her beautiful long blonde hair is what every young woman seems to want.

The cut: Although we have seen her in different lengths, the cut I'll duscuss is just below shoulder level. This length allows her hair to swing and move with her body. Layering starts at about jaw level and extends to the ends. Her bangs are completely sererate - not blended in. They are fairly thick and short enough to show off her beautiful eyes and fine brows.

The color: Unless you are lucky enough to be a natural blonde, use a tint to lighten your hair to a light golden blonde. You may need professional assistance to achieve this truly delicate color. Next you will add extra light or white blonde highlights and follow up with a deep conditioner to obtain her beautiful healthy shine.

The style: Use a shampoo and conditioner formulated for your hair type. To dry, clip all the hair above your cheek bones up and out of the way. Everything from ear level down should lay close to the body. Style this area by brushing it smoothly in a downward motion while drying it thouroughly. Cup the ends under slightly. Dry your bangs straight. When that's done, release the rest of the hair and apply a light gel or mousse. You will blow dry this area for fullness. Do this by using a blowdryer and brush to dry it in the opposite way that it will fall. This builds body. Finish styling with your fingers and a light, flexible hair spray.

For a fluffier and dressier look: You may have seen Hillary's more dressed up look with more fluff and big messy waves. For this look, tip your head upside down and dry the root area for fullness leaving the ends damp. Flip your hair back over and finish drying by scrunching in waves using a diffuser. Dry the bangs using a large round brush and fluff them to the side.
